In 2019 Moscow is celebrating its 872th anniversary! Traditionally, it occurs on the first weekend of September. This year it falls on 7-8th of September and it’s a perfect occasion to enjoy the city in full swing! The streets will be decorated on a big scale, with lots of fun and entertainment organized for citizens and guests of the capital! It will leave nobody indifferent as interesting holiday events and activities will be held all over the city.
So where to go? What places should we visit first and foremost?
Find the answers to these questions in the article below – our Intermark Club team has created the list of 8 most interesting large-scale holiday venues for you to make the most of the day.
This year the birthday theme is devoted to the topic of theatre and the 80th anniversary of VDNKh (Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy).
1. Tverskaya St.
It is traditionally the center of celebration. Four thematic platforms will be set up on the street. The main theme is “Symbols and eras in the history of VDNKh”.
The first platform – “The Birth of the Legend” – will stretch from Kozitsky lane to Voznesensky lane. It will tell a story of the early years of the exhibition, as well as its recognizable features: art objects in the form of a sculpture “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman”, triumphal arches of the northern entrance and “the Golden Ear” fountain will be installed here.
The second platform – «Revival Program» is about space and second life of Soviet exhibition center. It will tell how VDNKh was restored after many years of desolation. Citizens will be able to take pictures in front of the art objects: “Vostok” rocket, which launched the spaceship with Yuri Gagarin into orbit, and other art objects.
The third platform – «Venue» – will be located between the houses No. 7 and 1 on Tverskaya street. Its topic will be “From Glavhladoprom to Moskvarium”. An eight-meter climbing wall will be opened here in the form of the legendary, but sadly not preserved till our days, Glavhladoprom pavilion.
The fourth platform – «New Era» on the Okhotny Ryad and Mokhovaya street will tell about modern VDNKh exhibition spaces and future development plans.
Also a special theatre and concert program will be presented on the special stages on Tverskaya Street.

2. Red Square
It is the Red Square where the celebration will start this weekend. Artists, vocal, instrumental and dance groups will perform in front of the public on the stage throughout Saturday and Sunday.
Fireworks are the important part of holiday athmosphere. Professional pyrotechnics annually organize a grand show of several thousand celebratory firework volleys nearby the Red Square. They can be seen from almost any spot in the city.

3. Moscow City Day at VDNKh
The main exhibition complex celebrates its 80th anniversary, so a grand concert with performances by best local artists and musicians is planned. All visitors will be able to take part in free workshops and informative lectures at VDNKh. And numerous thematic playgrounds will be organized for children.
In the Cosmos pavilion you can visit a free tour from 1PM to 7PM. Registration is not required, but you will need to purchase an entrance ticket to the pavilion.

4. Moscow museums
Around 80 museums in Moscow will be open to visitors for free. You will be able to enjoy various events: from museum guided tours to performances and concerts.
What To See:
Electromuseum in Rostokino will hold an eco-festival “A-real”, the main topic of which will be eco-feminism. The “ShShSh” women’s community will present its videos which draw a parallel between nature and a woman.

Where: Rostokinsky Aqueduct Park, pr-kt Mira, 186–188 (VDNKh metro station)
Gallery of Ilya Glazunov: the interactive program “Good evening, Moscow!” will be presented to visitors. It’ll be opened with the performance of the traditional Russian songs by the Russian folk choir. Then there will be an interactive fashion show of custom-designed hats and suits called “Red Moscow” and “Golden-dome Moscow”. Everyone will be able to try themselves as a fashion designer. All guests will be treated with tea, bagels and traditional Russian pies.
When: 5PM – 7:30PM, September 7th, Sat
Where: Volkhonka Street, 13 bld. 2 (Kropotkinskaya metro station)
Guides of Museum of V.A. Tropinin will tell visitors about the history of the most outstanding and significant works by Moscow artists. Guests will also learn how to weave lace using authentic vintage bobbins.
When: 12AM – 6PM, September 7th, Sat
Where: Schetininskiy lane, 10 bld. 1 (Polyanka metro station)
And don’t forget to have a look at special exhibitions in Pushkin Museum, MMOMA (Moscow Museum of Modern Art), Tretyakovskaya Gallery. We recommend you to book the tickets online in advance, as it is in high demand by the Moscow public.
5. Kuskovo estate
Another festive platform will be set up in the “Kuskovo” park. You will enjoy a special concert of classical music. All day, children and adults will perform the masterpieces of world classical music on stage, and in the evening visitors can witness the top performance by “Tenors of the 21st Century” (Saturday) and the Choir of the New Jerusalem Monastery (Sunday). In addition, the estate will provide excursions and exhibitions to its guests dedicated to the art of ceramics, fine and decorative arts.

6. Moscow parks
In the “Zaryadye” park Muscovites and guests of the city of any age – from adults to kids – will find entertainments which meets their preferences. The main theme of the park holiday activities will be “Theatre in Russia”. For two days, the park will become the epicenter of a theatrical carnival. Visitors can enjoy the performances of a symphony orchestra, academic choir and street theaters. You will find art installations in different corners, as well as witness the unforgettable interactive performances both for children and adults.
An opera program will be presented on the open stage in the park, from classical to modern opera. Moreover, the works of Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Puccini, Verdi, Rossini will be played.

Art park “Museon”
The “Museon” art park is one of the most picturesque places of the centre of Moscow – the main theme of the holiday will be modern fashion. Young Russian designers will present their ideas to the public, embodied in costumes from the avant-garde to casual. The culmination of the holiday will be a special fashion show of young Russian designers. Theatrical performances, creative master classes and educational programs will be also held here.
Everyone will have a chance to get to know the current trends in the fashion world and uncover the secrets of a stylish image.

Where: Art park “Museon” (Park Kultury, Oktyabr’skaya metro stations)
“Gorky” park is one of the major holiday venues in Moscow. But what will it be this time? Conceptual architecture, contemporary music or digital art? Well, how about everything at once: the “Moscow with Your Own Eyes” festival, which includes the performance by the best Russian DJs, participants of the world DJing championship ‘DMC DJ WORLD’, the best works of Moscow festival of digital art and creativity ‘Maker Faire Moscow’ and unique experience provided to you by the top artists in the genres of experimental music and visual installation.

7. Sport Events
More than a hundred sports activities will be held in the city as part of Moscow City Day.
The top event of this year’s celebration is the Sup-regatta – quite a new sport for Muscovites, for which you need to stand on the board and pick up a paddle. On Mokhovaya Street, a 35-meter sup-surfing pool will be installed. Everyone over 8 years old can participate.
On Mokhovaya street you can join a masterclass in parkour – a fashionable way to conquer the roofs.
Just steps away, on Okhotny Ryad, 2, a skate park will be opened. Everyone over 5 years old can learn the basics, and the profs will show the class on freestyle scooters. And a pump-track will also be presented, so the owners of bicycles, scooters and skateboards, who are bored of riding in a straight line, will be able to improve their skills on tracks of various difficulty.
The most exciting adventure awaits the most courageous. On Mokhovaya street,13 you will find two towers of 10 and 6 meters high and literally fly between them – on a steel rope that is pulled just above the pool for sup-surfing. 80 meters flight with a view of the Kremlin!
If you are not keen on climbing high, why not to enjoy it from the ground? From 11AM to 4PM on September 7 and 8, desperate tightrope walkers from Russia and other countries will walk along the sling between the Oko tower, Moscow City and Neva skyscraper at an altitude of more than 300 meters. You can watch the daredevils from the street or from the top floor of 354-meter Oko tower (Moscow City, Vystavochnaya metro station).
8. Moscow City Day Fireworks
The traditional festive fireworks consists of more than 70 thousands salvos. Professional pyrotechnicians will try to surprise every spectator by experimenting with colors, shapes and the height of fireworks. Want to get the best view? The most beautiful and convenient platforms for viewing fireworks are Vorob’evi Gory (Sparrow Hills), Poklonnaya Gora, Luzhnetskaya Naberejnaya embankment, Bolshoy Moskvoretsky bridge, Krymski bridge and Borodinsky bridge.
